Title: An Account of Corsica, the Journal of a Tour to That Island; and Memoirs of Pascal Paoli.
Author: Boswell, James Description: xxiv, 382 pp. Folding map. (8vo) 8x5, period full calf, raised bands, morocco title label. Housed in a custom tan cloth drop-back box. First Edition. Map with publisher's imprint, leaves E2 & Z3 are cancels; half title present, lacking the final blank (Aa8). This was the first work to bring Boswell fame; it also brought the cause of Corsican independence, fought for under the handsome and impressive General Paoli, to international attention. Boswell's urgent calls for support and the romanticized account of Paoli as lionized father figure nearly brought England into war with France over Corsica. Eventually the struggle for independence was lost, and Paoli fled to England, where he enjoyed widespread adulation. Place Published: London Publisher Name: Edward & Charles Dilly Date Published: 1768 Condition reportRear joint beginning to split at foot of spine, minor edge wear; short diagonal tear to map; an occasional spot of foxing; else very good.
