OPTIMISTIC ENGLISH LAD DAGUERREOTYPE

This ¼ plate has the typical English coloring, with a cloud backdrop. In many daguerreotypes this cloud backdrop seems arbitrarily placed behind the subject. Here, the stance and attitude of the subject seem to match the fresh outdoor English scene, making this almost an emblem of youthful British idealism. There are some spots on the plate, but this still has a lively vitality. Original seals are preserved, but this is not sealed. In a nice American case that goes well with the plate. [D3]
