Rare 18th C. Louis XVI Commode w/ Marble Top

Sign In to see what this sold for

Rare, fine late 18th Century Louis XVI brass-mounted mahogany commode in the manner of Adam Weisweiler, having a rectangular white marble top, 33"h. x 46 1/2"l. x 21 3/4"w. Recently restored; age cracks on marble. Provenance: Descended in the family of Thaddeus Leavitt of Suffield, Conn., silverplated brass tag on side "Thaddeus Leavitt Nov 25 1773 [wedding date] Elizabeth King [wife]". Accompanying partial letter found in back of one of the mounts. Born in 1750, Thaddeus Leavitt is believed to be the original owner of this piece. He was a prominent ship owner and entrepeneur in Suffield, an importer of goods from the West Indies and elsewhere, and one the eight original purchasers of the Western Reserve. Stylistically, this commode relates to work by Weisweiler, a German born cabinetmaker who worked in Paris in the late 18th Century, producing neo-classical style furniture sold by others to members of the French Court including Marie Antoinette and England's Prince Richard (later George IV).
