Title: Collection of 2 signed first edition books and 6 signed letters
Author: Heyward, Du Bose (1885–1940)
Description: Books are each inscribed & signed by the author, DuBose Heyward to close family friends Martha and Wilson Robinson. With: Lost Morning. Cloth, dj. Farrar & Rinehart, [1936]. * And, Star Spangled Virgin. Orange cloth, color pictorial dj. Signature dated 1940, the year DuBose died. Farrar & Rinehart, [1939]. * All 6 letters signed by DuBose's wife, Dorothy Heyward to Martha Robinson / Mrs. Wilson Robinson; 3 are autograph letters signed (one 2-pages on Heyward letterhead, 1 on postcard with letterhead and 1 in pencil signed with initials D.K.H.) and 3 are typed (1 on letterhead with envelop, 1 on postcard with letterhead, and 1 on folding card with envelope. Letters most discuss various daily life topics and discuss DuBose's recent passing away; those with dates range from 1937 to July 20, 1940. * Also, includes a related newspaper clipping on Du Bose. Together, 2 books, 6 letters and paper clipping. Heyward is the author of Porgy (co-written with his wife Dorothy), which was the source of the famous Gershwin musical, "Porgy and Bess," and is considered the first major southern novel to portray blacks without condescension. Langston Hughes called Heyward one who saw "with his white eyes, wonderful, poetic qualities in the inhabitants of Catfish Row that makes them come alive." Provenance: The consignor is from the Robinson family.

Condition report

Books and jackets somewhat worn, chips, fading, tears, Lost Morning book spine ends chipped, else books and jackets fair to good; expected wear to letters, but mostly very good or better. Together, sold as is; scarce archive lot.
