Artist: Deborah Teachout Bailey; Cortland, Ohio Sponsor: Butler Wick & Company Media: Acrylic and enamel paint Artist Statement and Biography: The "Nike of Samothrace" is one of the masterpieces from the Hellenistic Age, c. 190 B.C. Carved from marble; it represents the Goddess of Victory alighting triumphantly on the bow of a war galley. I have portrayed her transforming from a classic goddess carved from marble to a polished steel "Icon" of the Industrial Age. Her body is painted to appear as if it is carved from marble and flowing into the upper portion that has been manufactured of highly polished steel. The base is painted to resemble a rich mahogany, representing both the wood of a ship and the elaborate woodwork found in the mansions built in the Industrial Age. Deborah Teachout Bailey earned a BA from Kent State University in printmaking with a minor in art history. She is retired as a graphic artist from Delphi Automotive Systems after 30 years of service. Her work has been exhibited at many area galleries including the Butler Institute of American Art and she has won numerous awards. She enjoys printmaking, sculpture, painting and fiber arts. Condition reportThe statue measurements are approximately 6 feet tall by 8 feet, 6 inches long. These are works of art and some statues are meant to be displayed out of the elements.
