Artist: The Liberty High School Art Class III, Jody Nudell, Art Teacher; Youngstown, Ohio Sponsor: Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County Medium: Acrylic paint
Artist Statement and Biography: "Pop! Goes the Goddess of Speed" emerged as the theme for the design as many of the students love the "Pop" movement of the 1960s and the work of Roy Lichtenstein in particular. Alexandria Globeck envisioned the goddess as Lichtenstein's Ben Day dot covered blonde from his oversized comic strip panels. Other blonde goddesses appear in panels around the base of the sculpture. The top of the base offers Lichtenstein-like paint strokes and an "explosion" so the goddess seems to be "popping" out of the blast.
The study of Roy Lichtenstein is most appropriate because Lichtenstein studied art at the School of Fine Arts at Ohio State University. He received his BFA and MFA and taught at OSU. His first one-man-show was at the Ten Thirty Gallery in Cleveland where he worked as an engineering draughtsman. Several comparisons can be made between his art and our Packard automobiles. Like the Packard, Lichtenstein's work has style and beauty. The Packard is an icon of the pop culture that Lichtenstein's art celebrates. Both contain a wealth of detail and a love of contour line and both exude a warm nostalgia for the past. My students learned about a man, a style, and an era. We hope you enjoy their interpretation of "Pop! Goes the Goddess of Speed." Condition reportThe statue measurements are approximately 6 feet tall by 8 feet, 6 inches long. These are works of art and some statues are meant to be displayed out of the elements.
