Artist: Irene G. Was; Warren, Ohio Sponsor: Lane Funeral Homes Medium: Acrylic paint
Artist Statement and Biography: My inspiration came from the Packard automobile, our surroundings and the adjacent Mahoning River. Because the original goddess was made of chrome; I translate that to silver on the body and wings. The base of the goddess is painted in greens and browns signifying the Mahoning River undulating in gentle waving movements. The driftwood signifies things found along the river. It also serves as a reminder of what it once was, a thing of beauty. On the sides of the base are paintings of the four buildings that are in Packard Park - Packard Music Hall, the National Packard Museum, the gazebo in the Japanese Tea Garden and the Packard Shelter House.
In 1968, Irene Was earned a BS in education from Kent State University. In 2001, at age 80, she earned a BFA in painting also from Kent State University. She and her late husband are the parents of four daughters. She is a cancer survivor and enjoys the love and support of her family. Her work has been exhibited at Trumbull Art Gallery, the YWCA Women's Show and Kent State University. Condition reportThe statue measurements are approximately 6 feet tall by 8 feet, 6 inches long. These are works of art and some statues are meant to be displayed out of the elements.
