Artist: Michael Boich; Niles, Ohio Sponsor: Phillips Family Media: mixed
Artist Statement and Biography: In its time, the Goddess of Speed represented the ideas of impeccable craftsmanship, luxury, performance, ingenuity, and speed. It was a symbol of new ideas and innovative thinking. Now it is a symbol of what was.
The lower portion of the statue is covered with a liquid resin metal paint which reacts like metal. The upper portion is rendered in a manner that conveys excellence - shiny, metallic, and polished. I wanted to convey that the obsolescence, the lack of ingenuity, and the unwillingness to adapt, are slowly peeling away from our community. And as we continue to adapt and rebuild, as we accept and implement new ideas, we can look to the goddess as a symbol of now, not of then.
Michael Boich grew up in Warren, Ohio, and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School. Using his training as a sculptor, Michael added material to his statue to help convey his message that we must adapt to the elements surrounding us. Condition reportThe statue measurements are approximately 6 feet tall by 8 feet, 6 inches long. These are works of art and some statues are meant to be displayed out of the elements.
