Artistic Statement and Biography: The Illuminated Manuscripts of the 13th and 14th centuries inspired this creation of "Jean. A Personal Collection." I created a goddess with the same intricate scrolled borders, elongated linear style, glowing red-brown-gold surfaces, and pictorial narratives, but more contemporary. I attempted to reproduce in mixed media, a dense text-like pattern juxtaposing a collage of images as well as contradicting textures to leave the viewer with a vivid impression of lavishness and a sense of curiosity. The underlying focus is that each individual woman (goddess) has dignity and worth.

 

Phyllis Bako has a BA in art education from Ohio State University and MA in education from Youngstown State University. For thirty-five years Phyllis has taught visual art for Niles City Schools. Growing up on the family farm in Niles instilled a passion for the subtle nuances of nature. She states that she began to see the beauty in the simplest of forms. From that she became and continues to be an artist manipulating found materials and fibers.

The statue measurements are approximately 6 feet tall by 8 feet, 6 inches long. These are works of art and some statues are meant to be displayed out of the elements.
