Artist: Daniel G. Mathey; Warren, Ohio

Sponsor: Baker, Bednar & Associates

Medium: Acrylic paint

Artist Statement and Biography:  I wanted to show that the spirit of the Goddess of Speed is still alive today. She was the longest-lived mascot in the history of the American automobile, from 1926 to 1950. Gracing the hood of a Packard, she soon became synonymous with excellence and state of the art technology. This statue shows a chrome goddess coming to life with the mural-like illustrations along the lower portion of the statue, showing a timeline of some of the Packard brothers' accomplishments from 1890 into tomorrow.

Dan Mathey is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. While in the Army Mathey was stationed at the Beaumont General Hospital in Texas, where he produced medical illustrations and training aids. He is now retired from General Motors' Packard Electric Division where he was a technical illustrator in the presentation graphics department. To commemorate the Packard Centennial in 1999, Mathey created an oil painting titled, "The First Packard Car Show," depicting the Packard brothers and the first Packard automobile surrounded by townspeople.
