Renowned western artist George Mathis, well known for his historic depictions of the California Gold Country also is known for his Space & Aviation paintings, examples of which have been in the Smithsonian as well as the special collections of Washington State University. This tempera on board (23½x34" image area on painted matte wood framed to 31"x45"). Painting illustrates GEMINI 6A capsule in space with Wally Schirra & Tom Stafford clearly visible inside over a background of a view of the United States, Mexico & the Caribbean. A magnificent piece of original art. NOT A PRINT. Accompanying the painting is a beautiful 'Topping' contractor's model from Martin Corp. This 4-part model is 20"x2", white with black capsule & black Lucite base with incised name. Ideal pair of display items. A similar model alone brought over $800, including buyer's premium, in Regency-Superior's April 2007 auction.
