African American Shanghaied From Savannah, GA as an 8 year old boy. Enticed aboard a ship on the Savannah wharf as an eight year old boy, Golding spent half a century traveling the world as merchant seaman. In 1932, while in poor health he returned to Savannah for a hospital stay. There he documented his travels from memory in approximately 70 maritime drawings. In 2000, the first major exhibition of his art (Hard Knocks, Hardship and a Lot of Experience) was organized and presented to the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah. His work is in a number of private collections, as well as that of the Georgia Museum of Art. Thirty of his drawings, nearly half of his total output, are held by the Morris Museum of Art.
