An 1881 engraving by William Edgar Marshall, printed by George Barrie in 1881. Signed by Longfellow shortly before his death, also signed by Marshall who later made the engraving and prints of Emerson, Hawthorne, and Holmes. Longfellow was the most influential poet of his day. This portrait is surrounded by vignettes from his poems including The Song of Hiawatha, The Courtship of Miles Standish, Evangelina, Tales of the Wayside Inn, and The Children's Hour. Longfellow was a professor at Bowdoin College and Harvard for 23 years. His first wife died while they were on a European trip. His second marriage was to Frances Appleton and resulted in six childred. In 1861 Frances died in his arms. Longfellow lived at Craigie House on Brattle Street, Cambridge. This had once been George Washington's headquarters. The Longfellow House is a National Monument, open to visitors. Evidence of foxing. 1881 26 x 20 image; 42 x 33 1/2 Framed
