Wendell Phillips (carte-de-visite), Slavery] THE LIFE AND TIMES OF WENDELL PHILLIPS by George Austin. Lee and Shepard, Boston, 1888, 12mo , 431pp. Brown cloth with blind-stamping and gilt titles on front board and spine. Light edge wear to covers. Front interior hinge is cracked and eps at front are becoming loose. Bookplate on fpd, but otherwise clean. With an original albumen cdv photograph of Wendell Phillips by JW Black & Co laid in. It shows a nearly identical profile as that depicted in the engraved portrait frontis executed by FT Stuart. Phillips was born in 1811 and educated at Harvard Law School. He became a leading figure in the Anti-Slavery Society and was the society's most popular speaker. During the Civil War, Phillips publicly criticized Lincoln for not taking a stronger stance against slavery. He died in 1884.
