(Louisiana Purchase) THE UNVERSAL ASYLUM AND COLUMBIAN MAGAZINE, Phila, printed by William Young, a bound volume in the following order; June, 1790 (pages 331-384 with a heavy stain through most of the lower text in the area of the gutter and with chipping to the upper margins of the last 6 leaves with a resultant loss of a small amount of text without loss of sense); March, 1791 (pp 129-208, lower right corner lacking from p163 with loss of 2 letters of text, some early ink marginalia and a little staining to last few leaves, o/w vg); May, 1791 (pp 289-360) ˝" wide row of text removed from center of p357-58, o/w complete and vg); October, 1791 (pp 219-288, complete, vg); February, 1791 (pp 67-128, title leaf with 4 inch tear, text is lightly foxed, o/w vg); January, 1792 (pp 1-80, title leaf stained and soiled and lower corner of first 4 leaves chipped, but no loss of text); April, 1792 (pp 217-280, one sig pulled and edges worn, damp staining to upper ˝ of last 6-7 leaves); December, 1792 (pp 361-332, title leaf somewhat stained and early ink ownerships, pp 411 with large hole/printing defect, the page being printed after the paper tore and creased causing loss of text), followed by a 4 page index for the July –December 1792 issues, which in turn is followed by a 4 page 1792 announcement of the publishing of vol. 7 of Dobson's Encyclopedia, which in turn is followed by the following pamphlet: AN ACCOUNT OF LOUISIANA, BEING AN ABSTRACT OF DOCUMENTS IN THE OFFICES OF THE DEPARTMENTS OF STATE, AND OF THE TREASURY, Carlisle, printed by George Kline, n.d. [1]-21pp. According to Thompson "Early Publications of Carlisle", it was published in 1803 and advertised in the Gazette on Dec 7, 1803 as just published. The pamphlet's existence grew from the public's desire to know more about the Louisiana Purchase. Scarce printing. This ed not in Sabin (see 42177), other eds were published in the same year in Phila, Wilmington, and Albany. Howes L493. Wagner-Camp 2b:4. Shaw/Shoemaker 3616. According to Streeter, much of this info was furnished by John Sibley of Natchitoches for Thomas Jefferson. The pamphlet, in turn, is followed by several blank leaves which have been variously written/drawn upon in an early hand. Articles include a Description of the Falls of Niagara by Andrew Ellicott, a continuing history of the American Revolution, an abstract of the New French Constitution, a Speech Delivered by a Creek Indian, American Manufactories, On Penal Laws, Agricultural Experiments, On the Establishment of a Mint, etc.
