(Canterbury Tales) THE ELLESMERE CHAUCER REPRODUCED IN FACSIMILE. Manchester, 1911. Folio portfolio housed in full black leather case with 4 leather straps and snaps, lacking the lower margin strap. Laid in is the original folio bi-fold prospectus dated 1910 offering the portfolio of 240 loose leaves for 50 POUNDS, folded twice and with marginal chipping, browning and tearing. The portfolio case has blue marbled paper interior and it appears to be contemporary with the plates, albeit an unusual format for the Ellesmere's Chaucer, which usually comes bound in morocco gilt in 2 volumes. Page 9 with 3" horizontal tear, ½ " x ½" tear to p 369, repair to tears at bottom of p32, 1" tear in lower margin of p18, 20, and 22. Some of the other plates have minor edge distress. P1-462 have all been numbered in pencil in lower corners, 9 other leaves + 2 other blanks present. Complete with 240 leaves as issued. Portfolio beginning to split along its hinges, manuscript paper label affixed to spine. No lib markings.
