Antique 5-String Open Back Banjo, late 19th c.,
no-name, mahogany neck, nickel-plated pot. This instrument, although salvageable for playing, is probably destined to be a wall hanger as it is a genuine piece of American folk art. A painted grapevine runs the length of the fingerboard andinto the peghead. Tendrils emanating from the vine's base form the name "Captain George Adams". The banjo's head is painted as well, but with a colorful floral wreath. The underside of the head serves as an autograph repository for severalnames. These signatures are worthy of research since three of them are accompanied by Missouri locations and one is dated 1888. Comes with softshell case. - Needs ten tension rods, tailpiece, tuners, new head and bridge to beplayable. Worn, with handpainted elements somewhat faded.
