Scarce Naval Commission Signed by President John Tyler

JOHN TYLER, 10th President.
Partly-printed Document Signed, "John Tyler" as President, on vellum, May 31, 1844, Washington, D.C., 17" x 13.5", Very Choice Very Fine. Scarce Navy Commission, appointing Matthiaas C. Marin as "a Lieutenant in the Navy." Countersigned by Secretary of the Navy "J. Y. Mason," and featuring large engravings of an heraldic eagle at the top, militaria at the bottom, and a large paper seal with all its teeth intact, except one. Vellum with characteristic toning, slight staining at edges and far right side of top engraving. Tyler’s signature is in black ink, over 3" long. Tyler (1790-1862) became president after the death of Harrison, annexed Texas, and remained loyal to Virginia following its secession.
