[President]. George Washington. Autograph endorsement signed, 2 Jan. 1796, on verso of 2pp manuscript document, proceedings of the Montauk Proprietors held at East Hampton, 19th of October 1795, regarding contracting with Henry P. Dering or any other authorized person to survey a tract of land at Montauk point to establish its suitability as the location of a lighthouse and its subsequent sale to the federal government for said purpose. Secy. of Treasury Tench Cox signed manucript addition placed after the Proprietors minutes providing futher explanation for Washington, and his endorsement follows: ''Received the 2d of Jan.y 1796 and approved the 4th George Washington.'' Construction of the lighthouse was first authorized in 1792 by the 2nd U.S. Congress under Pres. George Washington; construction began by June 7, 1796, and was completed Nov. 5, 1796. Integral leaf with docket detached and in pieces. Fold split within Washington's endorsement separates his signature from the rest of endorsement, and small corner torn off at that edge (not affecting signature), few small other edge chips not affecting text.
