Note: A sideboard sugar chest of the same form is illustrated in MESDA's {{Journal of Early Southern Decorative Arts}}, Winter 1997, Volume XXIII, Number 2, p. 48, and is attributed to Robertson County which adjoins Sumner County to the west. In the MESDA article, Anne McPherson notes that a "Side Board Sugar Chest" was included in the 1825 inventory and account sales of the estate of Nashville cabinetmaker James B. Houston. The sugar chest offered here is from the same shop as lot #1336 in this auction, which is closely related to two chests (figs. 276 and 278) and a secretary (fig. 75) illustrated by Williams and Harsh in The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture. Each is attributed to Sumner County or Middle Tennessee.
