Autograph Letter from Charmian Kittredge to Jack London, signed "Your own Woman"
Author: London, Charmian
Description: 2½ pages, in ink, on rectos only of 3 sheets of paper. 8x5, held together with both a clip & a straight pin.Charmian has just got the news that the final divorce decree was granted to Bessie London, and Jack is free to marry her. "My own Man: - Shepard wired the good news. McKisick has just confirmed it. And to save my life, I can't keep Bessie out of my mind. Poor, blind, miserable woman! And she has suffered like the rest of us. But mustn't think of her. McKisick says 'Now safe to proceed.' Thank God, you are free! And honestly, Man, I am glad, first for you, then for myself. For when you marry me, dear, you will be more free than ever before in your life. I wish I could come to Elwood, Ind., and marry you there. My own Man, your own Woman." Charmian would not have to wait long - she and Jack were married the following evening, in Chicago, and spent their wedding night at Hotel Victoria. At a later date, Charmian has written at the top of the letter in red pencil, "Final decree granted," followed by a "2" with a circle around it.
