Letter from Jack London to Charmian Kittredge
Description
Autograph Letter from Jack London to Charmian Kittredge, signed Mate
Author: London, Jack
Description: 5 pages in pencil, on 5 sheets of plain paper. 8¼x6, held together with a clip.Jack is on a lecture tour through the Midwest, while Chamian is "holed up" in Newton, Iowa, during the final weeks before Jack and Bessie's divorce was to become final, on November 17. Two days later, Jack and Charmian were married by a justice of the peace in Chicago. "My Mate - Always forward my clippings I send you, to my mother. She reads & passes on to B. who pastes them up. Shall I return to you your letters as you send them to me? Had a good night at the University of Mo. last night. Frequent rounds of applause, etc. Have a headache today, cold sores on the mend... I am glad you read 'The Secret Woman.' I think the book, in subtle ways, fired you for our meeting at Ames [Jack and Charmian had met at Ames, Iowa, at the end of October]. I am exercising every chance, & breathing deep. Because of your tip, I now give an elaborate preamble to my lecture, in which I tell audience how I came to go on such a trip, etc. etc. It seemed to get things on a good footing right away. Dear woman, I think much of you. I am proud to know you mine. And I love you more deeply than I have ever loved human being before. You are not my vixen, nor am I I [sic] your red fox; but I am your wolf. Are you my she-wolf? Wolf."
