Antique Monumental Japanese Bronze Censor,
ca. 19th c., an avian theme dominates the decorative elements of this stunning work, the lid consisting of a screeching bird of prey triumphant over a headless dragon, below this scene of carnage is an open register showing cranes in flight, each handle is topped by an alert phoenix having spread wings, the censor's bulbous body has four raised panels depicting songbirds in high relief, beneath is a round segment featuring six smaller scenes of birds, four legs in the form of elephant heads rest upon a base having eight dragon panels, the whole disassembles into nine distinct elements for storage and/or shipping. - Gorgeous applied patina having a dark red-brown hue. - 54" x 24" - Repair to the wing of one phoenix, else intact as made.
