David Adolf Constant Artz (Dutch, 1837-1890),
"The Piano Lesson", oil on canvas, artist's name inked by another en verso on period label affixed to stretcher, a charming domestic scene, the focal point of which is a young girl in a bright yellow dress practicing the piano in a rather dim interior, her music teacher watches intently from the shadows to her left, while the student's mother hovers nearby with what may be a hymnal. In carved gilt wooden frame of the period, but possibly not original to the painting. David Adolf Constant Artz is listed in Benezit and Davenport's. He exhibited widely and is best known for depicting both human genre and natural subjects. - SS 25" x 34.25"; DOA 37.5" x 43.75"
