Edward William Cooke (1811-1880), The Beach,
oil on board, titled and signed en verso "The B(each) of Sorento" above "E. W. Cooke,"bright sunlit beach scene with colorful figures lounging around a beached sailing vessel, Mt. Vesuvius is just visible under the aft, retains old paper label reading "Miller / Artists' Colour Manufacturer / 56 (Long) Acre London" (a well known colourist boasting over 15 prominent Royal Academicians and Associates as customers, Miller & Co. were at the 56 Long Acre address from 1841-1873); housed in an attractive gilt composition frame with shell and scroll motif and linen liner; Following in the footsteps of both his father and uncle, Edward William Cooke began his artistic career as an engraver. He later took on painting as his primary pursuit, garnering a reputation for his fine detail and atmospheric techniques. This picture is a fine example of his favorite subject: marine life. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and often found himself drawn to the unique landscape of Naples and her environs, as illustrated in this intimate view. Cooke enjoyed great success during his lifetime and continues to be recognized today as one of the great marine artists of the 19th century. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy and British Institution and his works can be found in numerous public and private collections, including the Tate Gallery and the National Maritime Museum.
