William Picknell (MA/CA, 1853-1897), Summer Field,
oil on canvas (relined), signed lower right "W. L. Picknell," a lone figure tends the field on a hazy summer day, strong composition with bold diagonals lends depth to an otherwise flat landscape, deft handling of atmospheric conditions, housed in an appropriate gilt wood frame with composition ornament; William Picknell was born in Vermont, but moved to Boston as a young teenager. His uncle sent the budding artist to study with George Inness in Italy. Picknell then traveled to France, studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and exhibiting in the Paris Salon. He returned to Massachusetts in the 1880s, but he was again in France by 1889. This work illustrates the influence of the French artists and American emigres practicing the new concept of en plein air painting. - SS 13.25" x 17.25"; DOA 21.25" x 25.25" ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
