Christopher Clark (FL, b.1903), Alabama Musician,
oil on canvas (waxed), signed and dated in lower right "Christopher Clark 1926 ALA," likely an Alabama scene featuring a young black musician playing an eight-string guitar and gazing directly at the viewer. The subject sits under a heavily laden satsuma tree, beyond which is a distant body of water and a female figure carrying a basket under a sky pregnant with billowing clouds; simple ebonized wood frame; Born in Quincy, Florida in 1903, Christopher Clark studied at the University of Florida. He achieved success as a regionalist artist and exhibited his work throughout the East Coast, even painting several murals at Radio City Music Hall in Rockefeller Center. He is also associated with the WPA's Federal Artists Program. Known for his striking compositions and coloring, this picture is a fine and important example of an early 20th century southern regionalist. - SS 31.75" x 39.75"; DOA 34" x 42" ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
