oil on canvas (relined), signed lower right "J. F. Murphy," picturesque pastoral landscape with trees and stream in an open expanse of green pasture, the forest edge just visible in the hazy distance, housed in a later period appropriate gilt wood frame; John Francis Murphy achieved fame for his quiet tonalist landscapes during his lifetime, garnering the nickname "American Corot." Almost entirely self-taught, Murphy exhibited and was a member of the National Academy of Design. He won numerous awards during his lifetime and his works are in numerous public and private collections, including the Corcoran Gallery and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. - SS 13.75" x 19.5"; DOA 22" x 28"
