Single-cylinder engine by Simson.
During the Cold War, Simson became one of East Germany's primary moped manufacturers. In fact, Simson-powered motorcycles competed quite successfully in various racing events. The company's presence had shrunk considerably by the early 1990s and, at present, Simson still produces motorbikes in Germany.
Of the various three-wheeled motorized applications, this is surely one of the more interesting. Completely operated with hand controls, it is intended for use by handicapped individuals and, in its present condition, appears to be entirely unrestored. While the grey upholstery is in fair condition, the paint suffers from visible corrosion on the lower sections. The brown vinyl convertible top features plastic rear and side windows and likewise suffers from the effects of aging. Considerable road use is readily apparent on the engine as well. Although this Simson-powered Paraplegic's Scooter requires extensive restoration, it is an exceptionally rare vehicle of which few examples exist.
