Pen on paper. Image size: 15 ½ x 9 1/4 in. This two-sided drawing provides unique insight into this leading Social-Realist painter and WPA artist's quest to define the human condition. A simple conversation on the front; on the verso Shahn employs symbols and dream-like imagery to convey deeper meaning. The image of the man in a bowler with his legs bound in rope is a self-portrait of the artist.
