George Morland. (b.1763-1804). British. Study of an English Sporting Dog. Pencil on laid paper. 7 3/8 x 8 7/8 in. Watermark: Britannia, circa 1790 (For similar mark, see Churchill, # 232). An accomplished English artist who had an instinctive feeling for nature. From the simplest little sketch to the most finished painting, his portrayals of animals never fail to charm. Similar examples of Morland's drawings of dogs can be seen in the collection of the British Museum of Art.
