Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps. (b.1803-1860). French. Portrait of a "Guerrard". Pencil on wove paper. 7 3/4 x 5 3/8 in. Initialed lower left and inscribed right: "un Guerrard". During Deschamp's travels in the 1830's he created works that focused on the importance of ordinary people. True to the French Romantic School his works at this time emphasized the personal and subjective. Beggars and peasants were frequently depicted. (Note, this drawing bears similarities to Decamps' painting: Mendiant Comptant sa Recette, 1833; In the collection of the Louvre, Paris). Provenance: The Ropp Collection, NYC; Shepherd Gallery, NYC.
