SAMPLER WITH SOLDIER. Mid 19th Century, Possibly Indiana. Silk on linen. On one side, tightly detailed motifs of a soldier, dressed in blue jacket and red trousers, standing at attention with rifle. Uniform resembles that of Colonel Lewis Wallace's 11th Indiana Volunteers, Zouaves Regiment. Also a hound dog, a house and block of flame stitch below a set of alphabets and numbers. The horizontal format also includes multicolored bands of stylized floral designs typically found in early vertical band samplers. Bright colors. Minor thread loss. Older frame. 25 1/2"w. 16 3/4"h.
