FINE ARCHITECTURAL CORNER CUPBOARD. Western Maryland, probably Frederick area, ca. 1780-1800. Walnut with pine secondary wood. A monumental two-piece cupboard, the upper section with arched doors flanked by swelled and reeded pilasters and surmounted by a bold cornice, the lower section with three drawers over two doors flanked by swelled and fluted pilasters, all resting on bracket feet; the interior has shaped shelves. Retains a fine old finish, replaced brasses, minor pieced repairs to feet and midmolding. 103 1/2"h. 60"w. 30"d., requires a 44" corner.
Branded on the top of the upper section is a partially legible mark "Alexr Grim N2_________D". The 1790 Census lists an Alexander Grimm in Washington County, Maryland, as head of a household with five white males over sixteen and two white females. That Alexander Grimm is almost certainly related to the Alexander Grim listed in the 1850 Census as living in Washington County and owning thirty slaves. Additionally, one of the interior shelves in the upper section is branded "S. Fine", but that name could not be traced. For a related cupboard, see Maine Antique Digest, February 1989, p. 24-A.
