Important Charles Sumner Greene & Henry Greene living room chair, in mahogany and ebony, ca. 1907, designed by the architects for Belle Barlow Bush, Pasadena, California, an original sketch dates the design to March 22, 1907, signed with the branded signature of Charles Sumner Greene: "his true mark, Sumner Greene," original finish, 21"w x 19"d x 36.25"h, excellent condition Executed in the workshops of Peter Hall (1876-1939) and John Hall (1864-1940) at 900 S. Raymond, Pasadena, California. In July of 1905, Dr. William T. Bolton and his wife commissioned their third residence from Greene and Greene, together with architect-designed furniture for the entrance hall, foyer, living room and dining room. The Bolton and Robinson commissions of 1905 marked the first use of the ebony peg and mahogany furniture that became their signature design feature for the 1907-1911 commissions. The dining room furniture was in production in early 1907, when Dr. Bolton died. Mrs. Bolton elected to rent the residence to Belle Barlow Bush. Ms. Bush commissioned the remaining furniture designs. The furniture designed for her represents some of the best early work from the Greene-Hall collaboration and fit comfortably within the signature work of the firm from 1907-1911 for the Gamble, Blacker, Ford and Pratt commissions.Provenance: Belle Barlow BushMrs. Lert Bissell, Mrs. Herbert Allen (Bush daughters and heirs by descent)Michael Carey Gallery, New York City Christie's June 1993 20th Century Sale Private Collection 1993-present
