The step back form fitted with a pair of glazed doors opening to reveala an interior with six shelves, raised over a base with two short drawers, the handles carved with lion heads. 92"H. 47"W. 20"D. Provenance: This bookcase once belonged to General Gershom Morse Barber of Cleveland, Ohio. Barber studied at the Western Reserve College, Hudson, Ohio, and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He taught mathmatics at the Baldwin Institute, now Baldwin Wallace College, Berea, Ohio. He resigned this position in order to complete his legal studies under the tuteledge of Judge Samuel B. Prentiss, and was admitted to the bar in 1857. His military service was principally with the sharp shooters, of which he commanded a batallion from 1863 to 1865. At the close of the Civil War he was appointed to Brigadier General of Volunteers. After the Civil War, Barber returned to Cleveland and served both in the Superior Court and the Court of Common Pleas. He died July 10, 1903. This piece was passed by descent through the family, until it was sold to a private dealer and to the present owner. Condition: very good, light surface imperfections like light scratches, otherwise very good.
