Rare original gray boards, uncut. Condition: Usual foxing, staining, and browning, small closed tear in the lower margin of pp.281/282 of Volume II, a few leaves roughly opened, not affecting text, some light worm damage to final blanks of volume II; neatly rebacked, with portions of the original printed spine labels laid down; in brown half morocco slipcase. first edition, in the scarce original boards. First issue with the following points: in Volume I, the pagination is present on p. 71 (sequence not determined), p. 89 is misnumbered 93 (as in all copies examined), on p. 243, Chapter XVI is misnumbered XIV (as in all copies examined), and on p. vii the final "i" present in the pagination on p. vii (sequence not determined); in Volume II, the fifth line of the copyright notice reads "a book" (BAL State B, sequence not determined). xi, [1, blank], 282, [4, blank]; [2], [2, blank], 289, [3, blank] pp. With the final blank leaf in Volume I, and with the blank following the title-page and the final blank in Volume II.
