Illustrated title and terminal text leaf; publisher's ad leaves in the front and rear. 8vo (171 x 110 mm, 6 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches). Publisher's blue cloth, covers stamped in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Crimson morocco gilt case. Condition: Hinges reinforced, minor bumps to the corners. Provenance: Le Comte Alfred D'Orsay (presentation inscription signed by Dickens on the half-title, D'Orsay's bookplate on the front pastedown); A. Edward Newton (bookplate). important presentation copy of the first edition. Dickens has inscribed the half-title: "The Count d'Orsay / From his Friend / Charles Dickens / Devonshire Terrace / Nineteenth May 1846." This presentation is dated just one day after publication. Beginning his famous affair with Countess of Blessington in 1823, the couple befriended and hosted much of the literary elite and other notables at their fashionable salon. Indeed, Dickens would name his sixth child Alfred d'Orsay.
