CDV Album of Founder of Remington Arms, top-of-the-line cdv album, approx. 6 x 9", embossed leather covers with gilt, ceramic "feet" on covers, grape leaf appliques on clasp, blind-stamped floral patterns on gilt page edges. Album contains 56 identified individuals, all with names written on front of cdv in same hand, red ink, of which 14 are tintypes, mostly gem-sized mounted in cdv cards. There are also 21 unidentified individuals and one commercial cdv of Princess Alexandra. One cdv is Eliphalet Remington (1828-1924), apparently the third Remington son by that name. Eliphalet Remington II (1793-1861), son of E. Remington, Sr. (b. 1768), was the founder of Remington armory, later E. Remington and Sons. Remington moved the business to the intersection of the lake and canal in 1828, and many of these cdv's are backmarked Ilion, NY, and nearby towns. Remington's oldest son, Philo (1816-1889), is credited with helping his father build the family business and operating it during the Civil War, supplying most of the small arms used by the Union, and later with adding the typewriter/business machine division of Remington. Samuel (1818- ) and Eliphalet III were also part of the business, the latter until 1886. The cdv's in this album represent over 38 surnames, and all of their connections to the Remington family are not clear.
Condition:Corners of album have minor wear, one clasp is missing leaf applique. Minor toning of pages, especially where there is adhesive. Most cdv's in very good condition. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
