Folio (16 3/4 x 13 1/2 inches; 425 x 320 mm). 41 wood-engraved plates after Gustave Doré. Later red half morocco, spine lettered in gilt. Condition: Front inner hinge cracked and separated, joints rubbed, spine a bit soiled. first edition with dore's magnificent illustrations, printed on "papier du special marais". One of the most elaborate (and expensive) children's books ever produced, it contains many of the finest illustrations done by Doré in his great career. These designs tend to highlight the terror lurking in Perrault's tales, and are frequently quite unforgettable. Carteret III, 466; Gottlieb 106; Ray 247.
