Sao (?), Northern Cameroon or Chad. Animal. Terracotta sculpture has been discovered in funerary contexts across the southern reaches of the Lake Chad basin, and has been ascribed to the ''Sao,'' or ''people from before,'' by the present Muslim inhabitants. Both human and animal figures are known. Terracotta, 5'' h (excluding base), 5 1/2'' long, perhaps broken off of a larger pot.
