Ferdinand, Miranda, Prospero and the Spirits, Iris, Ceres, Juno, the nymphs and the reapers as described in Act IV, Scene 1, unsigned, possibly George Romney, British, 1734-1802, oil on canvas, 18th century, 40 x 50 in.; 20th century gilt wood and composition frame. Lined, craquelure, minute flaking middle left, two periods of restoration with retouch scattered throughout partially obscured by heavy varnish, less than 10 percent of surface affected; frame with abrasions. Provenance: Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, possibly 1912. Lot accompanied by an article by T. C. Duncan Eaves arguing for the attribution to George Romney as it relates to other paintings of Shakespearean subject matter, its provenance, and stylistic similarities; and a letter dated May 31, 1946 from the Huntington Library's C. H. Collins Baker discussing the attribution and suggesting other options such as William Hamilton.
