"Mr. Henry Irving as Hamlet" after the engraving after F. Armytage, signed lower right "J. Herons 1874" and inscribed verso canvas "Hamlet/Ay sir, to be honest as this world goes, is to be one man picked out of ten thousand. Act 2 Sc 2", oil on canvas, British, 19th century, 10 x 8-1/8 in.; gilt wood liner. Original stretcher and tacking edge, void upper right with related patch verso; liner resurfaced. Provenance: Inscription on tape verso indicates the painting was from Zealandia, an estate built by John Evans Brown, Asheville, North Carolina, 1908-1920. Private Collection, Arden, North Carolina.
