Dutch, 1644-1681, grapes, oranges and plums with covered Kraak bowl, Tiangi period bowl with Daoist immortals, glass roemer, open snuff box on a draped table, unsigned, oil on canvas, 20-5/8 x 27-3/4 in.; possibly original 17th century carved and gilt wood Louis XIII style frame. Lined late 19th/early 20th century with stretcher of that period, some cupping and cleavage, flaking upper right, several periods of restoration (area above wine level in roemer, lower right corner, peeled lemon, background, either side of central grapevine) affecting 20 percent of surface, areas seemingly free of retouch include grapes in foreground, covered bowl, most of lower left corner, plums, Kraak, central grape leaves, stem of roemer; frame with loss bottom right edge, regilded, some loss to gilding. Provenance: Descended in the family of George T. Harrison, Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Fred Meijer, Curator, Department of Old Netherlandish Painting, The Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD), has kindly given the attribution to Rootius and not Willem Kalf (Dutch, 1619-1693) and suggests certain elements may have been added to make it more like the work of Kalf, including highlights on the grapes, cover of the watch, and the edge of the dish.
