He is typical of a sailor of his time. Painted on the back of his neck is the date "1844". A thin rod which travels through the shoulders and allows the whirligig to be mobile and supports the sailors outstretched arms. His arms are set on a metal rod and incised at the end to simulate hands and each hand is drilled to hold a paddle. The paddles are copper sheathed at the grips and are made of wood. The figure sits one natural wood original base, 24"h. x 13"w. Provenance: The Sailor's Home, North Street Boston, Ma. Estate of Robert Oliver, Naval Architect. There has been some minor repairs to one of the paddles but the sailor is in otherwise excellent condition, all paint is original.
