Late 19th/early 20th Century decorated biscuit tin, 12"h. x 10"w. x 10"dia., the entire tin is painted in a reddish color and then decorated in leaf pattern gold trim, there are three excellent paintings on this item. On the front is an American eagle holding a shield with arrows in one claw and an olive branch in the other. ( This type of Eagle with shield represents the First Infantry Regiment, which under the name First American Regiment, was raised by Washington in 1784 ). At the bottom of the shield is the signature "Dean" which we believe to be that of W.L. Dean from Massachusetts (1854-1912). Dean also painted George Washington on horseback on each side of the tin. On the top of the lid are the words National Biscuit Co., with the number 50 in the center. We believe that the 50 refers to the number of biscuits that were originally in the tin box. Provenance: Estate of Robert Oliver, Naval Architect Boston, MA. Condition excellent.
