Author: J.-M. Garnier
Publisher: Imprimerie de Garnier
Printing Year: 1869, Limited first edition
Condition/Details: With handsome original or period marbled boards with three-quarter tan cloth and gilt embossing, this volume is a very scarce discourse on playing cards, containing a history of the development of card designs and games. This French-language volume is from the first and only edition of this text, which was limited to a small run of only a few hundred copies. The work is profusely illustrated with dozens of plates, depicting card designs as well as historical scenes, patterns and other relevant images. Several of these plates are with color. The volume shows significant external wear, with disbound boards, and the text is solidly bound with clear, lightly age-toned pages, aside from the prelims and final few pages which are detached and included. There is some mild, sparsely scattered foxing throughout. The original detached wrappers and spine are also included with the book. The illustration plates all show beautifully with minimal interfering age/wear indications. There is a decorative ex libris bookplate on the front pastedown. The book measures approximately 5.5"" x 8.25"" and contains 450 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50"
