Title: Iowa Hill, Placer County, Cal.
Author: Towle, George F. & H.F. Towle Description: Pictorial letter sheet with woodcut view of Iowa Hill, California, wooden shacks lining the main street, with a hotel and livery stable. The illustration with monogram in the block AT (or TA). Contains two letters, each 2 pages. 9¾x7½.In addition to the marvelous and quite rare view of the little town of Iowa Hill, the letter sheet is significant for the two letters it contains, written from the Towles to their brother Charley. It is not determined what the relationship of these Towles is to the publisher of the lettersheet. Both the letters are dated Santa Clara, the first, from George W. Towle, on February 13th, 1860: "You said that if I wanted to learn to write to the girls now was a good time to larn for you was in communication with one and you could learn me all the tricks of the trade... I suppose you will have to be excused from writing home much now as you have a place of more attraction just now in a home some where up above Sacramento, but I suppose that young me will get in that fix some times and I sill have to look out..." Six days later, H.F. Towle begins his letter in the third page: " You will perceive that George wrote about a week ago and left this page for me to fill. Your father has been chosen one of the Delegates from the County to the Republican State Convention to meet at Sacramento on Wednesday next... I am pleased to learn that your orchard prospects are so good and hope you may derive a good profit from it. I am also pleased to learn that Elisha is succeeding so well in business and hope he will be careful to treat his employer with the respect due to him as such... Your father gets just a little of the Carson Valley fever once in a while, but I trust it will not run so high but that a moderate application of cold water will break it up. I do not think that he can bear fatigue and hardships well enough to warrant his taking such a step..." Heading: (Pictorial Letter Sheet with 2 A.L.s.)Place Published: Iowa Hill/Santa Clara, Cal.
