Encased Postage Stamps
John Gault's 1864 Lincoln Campaign Encased Postage Stamp Related Ferrotype Medal
Abraham Lincoln & Andrew Johnson, 1864 Presidential Campaign, John Gault's Patent, Ferrotype Medal, Very Fine.
30 mm (about 1" in diameter). This is an original Encased Postage Stamp, Medal and Lincoln Presidential Campaign related, Political item. Here, John Gault has replaced his use of Postage stamps from his 1862 design for Encased Postage Stamp Currency, and instead used small central tintype photographs of both Abraham Lincoln and his running mate Andrew Johnson, located about where the postage stamp would be placed. The case design was also changed dramatically to display patriotic motifs with dual heraldic shields on the obverse moons. This particular example is pleasing, having a nice original brass frame. The tintype images have some dark spots of flaking or missing emulsion about Lincoln's head and face, plus about the image of Andrew Johnson. It states, "Pat AUG 12, 1862," relating this design directly to John Gault's patent for the manufacturing of Encased Postage Stamps.
A similar example is plated in the Fred Reed book entitled, "Civil War Encased Stamps," found on page 407. The image of Lincoln in this example being sharper that the Reed specimen plated. A further explanation of these historic campaign encased image medals can be found on pages 407 and 408 of Reed's book.
