JOHN ERICSSON, Swedish-born Naval Engineer Who Designed and Built the Ironclad "Monitor."
Autograph Letter Signed, "J. Ericsson," November 10, [18]59, no place, 7.5" x 4.75", Choice Extremely Fine. To an unnamed correspondent, in part: "The importance of the French patent has induced me to forward a second letter to Messrs. Newton of London containing a duplicate draft for paying the patent duty which falls due in the beginning of December...." Written and signed in medium brown ink. Framed with an image of Ericsson and a name plate to an overall size of 12.5" x 15.25". Ericsson went to New York in 1839 on a commission from the U.S. Navy that resulted in the first warship with screw propellers, the "Princeton." He is best known for designing and building the Union ironclad "Monitor" which engaged in battle with the Confederate ironclad "Merrimack" at Hampton Roads, Virginia on March 9, 1862, ushering in a new type of naval warfare.
